Penang welcomes the Year of OX

Many events are launched here to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The celebration will last until Chap Goh Meh, the last day of lunar new year. Chap Goh means fifteen and Meh is night, this day is the Chinese version of Valentine Day.

Penang is one of the 13 states in Malaysia. As a state it comprises Penang Island and Mainland Penang also known as Province Wellesley. In this blog I focus solely on things happened in Penang Island. Generally, I will try to cover as many things as I can, but I do have some areas of interest to cover especially the coffee shops and the hawker food. Penang has the most number of coffee shops in Malaysia and the culture of kopitiam, coffee shop in hokkien is a unique culture here.
It appears that it is easy to run a coffee shop than in any other business. It is a common scene here that the conner lot of the row of a building is occupied by a kopitiam. In order to draw the crowd, the operators will have to offer food in addition to beverage, there comes the growth of hawker food here. Well I estimate that a large kopitiam can cater for about 20 stalls and a small one about 5. The management of these stalls is a key factor to the success of the operation.

INTRODUCTION
